Hi Everyone! As many of you may have discovered FAD is holding the annual FAD Dance Stars Competition on July 19th 2014. This competition is the perfect opportunity to choreograph your own routine and put it together with amazing music and outstanding costumes! So if you want to enter into this year’s competition, but you’re not quite sure where to start, then this week’s blog is for you! Below we have outlined some key points to consider when choreographing your own routine.

FAD Dance Stars Competition – Where Do I Start?

Music Selection

«Interesting and entertaining to you, the audience and judges.  Look for music that has highs and lows to choreograph to and/or changes/variation in the song.  Avoid highly repetitive and monotonous song choices.

«Speed of music; ensure that the music is a suitable speed that you are able to display good technique.

«Appropriate to your age.  Refrain from choosing music that has inappropriate word phrasing or swearing.  Competition points can be lost for inappropriate choice of music.

Technique & Strength

«  Work to maintain energy level throughout routine with correct body alignment.

«  In addition to your creativity in your choreography, you are judged on your performance of that choreography. Give the best possible demonstration you can.

«  Clear execution of moves with strong, controlled posture and correct foot and limb placement throughout routine.

Creative Choreography

«  Create excitement, energy, enthusiasm and entertainment.

«  Show different levels – standing, kneel, floor work.

«  Use different facing and travelling directions, use floor patterns and stage positions (especially in groups and duets).

«  Originality – don’t use routines or sequences you do in your FAD class, don’t copy music videos or sequences seen on TV or movies. Try to create original movement sequences.

«  Is the routine suitable for your ability level?

Showmanship

«  Create excitement and energy through your expression.

«  If in a group use each other to interact.

«  When presenting your routine to the Judges, if you look like you’re enjoying yourself, then chances are they are too.

Appearance

«  Appearance should be neat and tidy with personal grooming such as hair, make up and appropriate support being the basic criteria for the Judges.

«  Costumes should be well fitting, linked to the theme or character of your routine and music.

«  Ensure additions to the costumes such as hats are pinned securely or if designed to come off, only come off as choreographed.

Synchronisation and Timing

«Perfect synchronisation in groups and duets.

«Timing – keep in time with the music and with each other.

«Ensure both solos and groups have an awareness of spacing and positioning throughout the routine.

Some Points to Remember

«Memorize your routine, practice facing many different directions, in front of different people.  Stop and start the song and try and pick up you where should be in the routine.

«Practice your routine with your facial expressions; don’t leave it to the day to smile!!

«Perform your routine in front of someone that can give the group feedback on timing with each other to help synchronise your performances.

«Wear the shoes and the costume several times to ensure it won’t distract you and remains intact.

These points and tips should be very beneficial for all those wanting to enter into the FAD Dance Stars Competition. Remember that entries close on Friday the 30th May 2014, and it is $20.00 for your first entry then $10 per entry after that, so grab some friends and enter more than once! Good luck choreographing your own routine; it’s time to get creative!
