‘Fun Facts you may or may not know about Dance and Cheerleading!’


  •  Cheerleading is over 100 years old!!
  • In the beginning Cheerleading started as an ALL MALE sport!!
  • Women were not allowed to partake in cheerleading until 1923!
  • Statistics now show that around 97% of all modern cheerleading participants are Female!! Isn’t that crazy for a sport that originally began as an all male sport!
  • Lawrence Herkimer (nickname Herkie) introduced the Pom Pom.
  • Herkimer also invented the Cheerleading Spirit Stick and the Herkie Jump – ever wondered where the Herkie Jump got its name from!! :-)


  •  The term ‘Jazz’ was first known as a style of music and dance during World War I.
  • Jazz Dance is a genre shard by a board range of dance styles!
  • Before the 1950’s, Jazz Dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American Dance.
  • In the 1950’s a new style of Jazz dance emerged, known as Modern Jazz with root in Caribbean traditional dance.
  • Jazz was a big hit in the early 50’s and is still one of the most popular dance styles all over the world!

Hip Hop:

  •  Hip Hop Dance has been around for more than 40 Years!
  • Break Dancing Originated in the Bronx are of New York City in the early 1970’s.
  • Hip Hop Dancers known as B-Boys competed with each other, inventing new moves and trying to out-perform one another.
  • Break Dance made a comeback in the late 1990’s, becoming popular all over the world.
