How to IMprove your kicks!!
Hi All FAD Jazz Students,
I hope you are all having a fabulous Term 3 at your Dance Classes!
This week’s blog is focused on our Jazz classes and I will be looking at ‘How to Improve Your Kicks!!’
When you are performing your kicks it is important to remember that it is not about how high you can get them but about the technique!
8 Important Tips to Remember to Help Improve Your Kicks!
- HEAD AND SHOULDERS – Keep your shoulders back and head up while doing your kicks, we don’t want a ‘hunch back’ look do we! :-)
- BACK - Ensure your back stays straight while performing your kick. Don’t bend forward at your hips you need to bring your leg up towards your chest not your chest down towards your knees.
- HIPS – You need to make sure that your hips are kept square and that they do not roll under, keep a nice straight line from your hips to your shoulders.
- SUPPORTING LEG – Your supporting leg must stay straight with the knee locked in.
- HEEL - Make sure that your supporting leg heel is on the floor and you are not lifting up through your heel to try and get your kick higher.
- TOES – This is the most important part of a kick! You MUST have lovely pointed toes/foot to finish off your kicks... You could do the most beautiful, correct technique and high kick but with an unpointed toe and it will never look perfect! You need to make sure that there is a full extension from the hip to the very end of your toes in your kicking leg.
- CONTROL – You need to make sure you are controlling your kick both in both the up and down motion. You need to try and pull your leg back into the starting position rather than relying on gravity to return it to its position. This will help strengthen your opposing muscles and help improve not only your kicks but your leaps as well. :-)
- PRACTICE – To get your kicks perfect it will take some practice. Start by practicing your kicks really low, just off the floor with correct technique and then once you have the correct technique try to get your kicks higher and higher but making sure you do not compromise your technique for the height! :-)
